Our senior leadership team, a diverse group of highly experienced individuals, is responsible for leading the teams delivering all of the British Council’s work across Qatar. 

Sam Ayton

Country Director

Sam joined the British Council Qatar as Director in September 2018. She has worked internationally in cultural relations with the British Council for over 20 years in Europe, the Americas, East Asia, South Asia and MENA working to share the best of UK’s education system whilst learning from others and developing links with the UK’s vibrant arts and cultural scene.

Zoheb Khawaja

Head of Business Development & Country Lead – Exams

Zoheb joined the British Council in June 2013. He has previously worked in different industries in a business development and account management function. His current role is to provide leadership and strategic management to Qatar exams department. 

Maissa Cortbaoui - Head of Resources - British Council, Qatar

Maissa Cortbaoui

HR Manager Oman, Qatar, UAE

Maissa joined us in March 2013. She has previously worked in different positions related to human resources management and operations management. Her role is to provide strategic and tactical Human Resources management for the Qatar, UAE and Oman offices.

Waseem Kotoub - Arts manager - British Council in Qatar

Waseem Kotoub

Senior Programme Manager, Culture and Sport Programme, Gulf

Waseem joined the British Council in 2009. He is a medical doctor and a pianist with extensive knowledge in the arts and proven track record of completing outstanding quality health, science, arts and creative economy projects. His background in management enriched his role in leading on all programmes for local and regional projects such as Qatar UK Year of Culture 2013 and the annual British Festivals amongst others.

Neil Sandilands

Deputy Teaching Centre Manager

Neil has worked in ELT for around 18 years in Europe, East Asia and MENA. 10 of these years were with British Council in Penang and Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia working in teaching centre management and exams management, and a further 5 years with British Council in MENA as DTCM Bahrain and DTCM Qatar.

Rohan Stephens

Head of Programmes and Partnerships

Rohan Stephens, acting Head of Programmes and Partnerships Qatar, joined the British Council in 2017 as the Touring Exhibitions Manager and Regional Visual Arts Advisor for MENA. Prior to joining the British Council, Rohan had worked extensively in the commercial sector, with roles at Christie’s in both the UK and the Middle East. Rohan’s education background is in Arts Management and Political Science, receiving both his Bachelor degree’s in his home city of Sydney, Australia.
